A
Allostasis
An active regulatory process through which the body maintains functional stability through adaptation and change, dynamically adjusting neuroendocrine, metabolic, and autonomic systems in response to internal and external demands. Unlike homeostasis, allostasis involves modifying biological setpoints as an adaptive strategy.
Allostatic Load
The accumulated physiological “cost” resulting from chronic and repeated exposure to stressors. It represents the wear and tear on biological systems (especially the HPA axis) due to the continuous activation of allostatic mechanisms seeking to maintain functional stability through adaptive adjustments.
AMPK / mTOR
Central cellular signaling pathways that regulate energy metabolism, cell growth, and responses to nutritional status. mTOR is activated during energy abundance and stimulates growth; its excessive activation can be detrimental. AMPK acts as an energy sensor, promoting adaptation during scarcity or stress, and is essential for the activation of autophagy and cellular homeostasis.
Antioxidants
Molecules capable of donating electrons to neutralize reactive oxygen species (free radicals), mitigating oxidative stress and protecting cellular integrity.
Anxiety
An emotional state characterized by feelings of tension and worry. At a biological level, its manifestation is studied in relation to imbalances in neuro-metabolic communication and the adaptive dynamics of the HPA Axis.
Autonomic Nervous System (ANS)
The part of the nervous system that regulates involuntary functions (heart rate, respiration, digestion, stress response). Composed of sympathetic and parasympathetic branches; its balance is evaluated through Heart Rate Variability (HRV).
Autophagy
A cellular recycling and renewal process through which damaged or dysfunctional structures are degraded and reused. Autophagy is essential for cellular homeostasis, metabolic adaptation, and the functional integrity of tissues.
B
Beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB)
One of the primary ketone bodies produced by the liver during ketosis or fasting. It serves as an alternative and efficient energy source to glucose for the brain and body.
Biodata
A structured set of measurable biological data reflecting physiological or pathological states, as well as responses to interventions. This includes metabolic, hormonal, inflammatory, and autonomic parameters, widely used in assessing biological function and risk in clinical and research contexts.
Bioengineering
An interdisciplinary field that integrates principles of engineering, mathematics, and biological sciences to model, analyze, and intervene in complex biological systems.
Bioinformatics
A discipline that integrates biology, mathematics, and computing for the advanced analysis of biodata.
Biological Age
A functional metric reflecting the state of health or deterioration of an organism’s cellular systems, in contrast to chronological age. It is a central focus in the study of Precision Longevity.
Biological Axes
Intersystemic communication pathways within the organism, crucial in Systems Biology. Examples include the HPA Axis, the Gut-Brain Axis, and the metabolic-immune axis.
Biological Digital Twin (DBM-Twin™)

Biological Trajectory
The temporal sequence of states and changes in an individual organism, reflecting the dynamic interaction of its physiological, metabolic, neuroendocrine, and immunological systems. It allows for the analysis of functional trends and the anticipation of potential imbalances before they manifest clinically.
Biomathematics
The application of mathematical models to the study of complex biological processes.
Biopredictive Intelligence
An approach developed by WellCode Hub that integrates biodata, bioinformatics, artificial intelligence models, and mathematical modeling to identify biological patterns and anticipate functional imbalance trends, based on the principles of Systems Biology and Precision Health.
C
Cellular Oxidation
A natural metabolic process that generates reactive oxygen species (free radicals). Its efficient management through antioxidants is key to protecting the cell from damage and aging.
Cellular Regeneration
The process of repairing and renewing cells and tissues. It is a biological mechanism that Precision Longevity approaches seek to optimize.
Chronic Fatigue
A persistent and intense state of exhaustion that is not relieved by rest. Its biological basis is often related to alterations in mitochondrial energy production efficiency and the impact of prolonged stress.
Circadian Jet-lag
A temporary disruption of the circadian rhythm caused by rapid travel across different time zones. It affects sleep, cognitive function, energy metabolism, and hormonal regulation. Managing it through sleep, light exposure, and lifestyle habits optimizes recovery and reduces metabolic stress.
Circadian Rhythms
Endogenous biological cycles that repeat approximately every 24 hours, regulating patterns such as the sleep-wake cycle, hormonal secretion, and metabolism. Their disruption directly impacts the HPA axis.
Cortisol
A fundamental glucocorticoid hormone in the stress response. Its chronic and dysregulated secretion by the HPA axis is associated with neuro-metabolic imbalances, including sleep and mood disturbances.

DBM® (Biological Mathematical Decoding)

Energy Metabolism
The set of biochemical processes responsible for producing, storing, and using energy. Its efficiency impacts brain function, stress response, metabolic health, and adaptive capacity.
Epigenetics
The field of biology studying modifications in gene expression without altering the DNA sequence. These mechanisms are influenced by environmental and behavioral factors (nutrition, stress, sleep, toxin exposure) and play a central role in biological adaptation and health regulation throughout life.

Fat Oxidation (Fat Burning)
The process of beta-oxidation by which the body mobilizes and utilizes stored fats as an energy source.
Free Radicals
Molecules with an unpaired electron that are highly reactive and capable of damaging cellular structures. They are the primary agents of oxidative stress.
G
Glucose
The primary monosaccharide and primary energy source. Its homeostasis (regulation) is crucial in preventing metabolic stress and maintaining brain function.
Glutamate
The main excitatory neurotransmitter of the central nervous system. An excess is associated with neuronal hyperactivity; its balance with the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA is key.
Gut-Brain Axis
A complex, bidirectional biochemical and neuronal communication network connecting the gut microbiota with the central nervous system. Its homeostasis is essential for mood modulation.
Gut Microbiota
The ecological community of microorganisms residing in the intestine. Its composition and integrity are vital for modulating the immune system, metabolism, and gut-brain axis communication.
H
Heart Rate Variability (HRV)
A physiological indicator measuring the fluctuations in time between consecutive heartbeats. It is a key non-invasive metric for assessing the balance of the Autonomic Nervous System and the capacity to adapt to stress.
Homeostasis
The ability of biological systems to maintain relative internal stability despite internal or external changes, preserving the proper functioning of the organism.
Hormesis
A biological phenomenon where controlled exposure to low-intensity stimuli (thermal stress, exercise, energy restriction) triggers beneficial adaptive responses. It is a central principle in the biology of stress and metabolic adaptation.
HPA Axis (Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal)
A central neuroendocrine system that regulates the stress response, digestion, the immune system, and energy. Dysregulation of this axis is linked to chronic alterations in well-being.
I
Iatrogenesis
A set of adverse effects or unwanted alterations caused by medical or therapeutic interventions, including inadequate diagnoses, treatments, or prescriptions. It highlights the need for evidence-based approaches and risk-benefit evaluation.
Insulin
A key peptide hormone in glucose metabolism. Insulin resistance (when cells do not respond properly to it) is related to energy, brain, and metabolic dysfunction.
Insulin Resistance
A state in which cells become less sensitive to the action of insulin, requiring higher production of this hormone to maintain glucose control.
Intermittent Fasting
A nutritional strategy alternating regular periods of eating and fasting within the same day or between consecutive days (e.g., 16/8 or 18/6). In humans, it is primarily associated with improvements in insulin sensitivity, metabolic flexibility, and circadian rhythm regulation. Significant activation of autophagy has not been consistently demonstrated in humans with standard intermittent fasting protocols, as this effect is mainly described in animal models.

Keto-adaptation
The process of metabolic adaptation through which the organism optimizes the use of ketone bodies as fuel.
Ketogenic Diet
An eating pattern characterized by very low carbohydrate, moderate protein, and high fat intake, aiming to induce ketosis. It is used to modulate energy metabolism and the neuroendocrine axis.
Ketogenic Metabolic Strategy
The strategic use of the ketogenic diet and other habits (e.g., fasting) to modulate metabolic and energy pathways, supporting neuroendocrine function.
Ketone Bodies
Energy molecules produced primarily in the liver from the oxidation of fatty acids under conditions of low glucose availability, such as during prolonged fasting, the ketogenic diet, or energy restriction states. The main ketone bodies are beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), acetoacetate, and acetone. They serve as an alternative and efficient energy source for tissues like the brain, heart, and muscles, while also acting as signaling molecules influencing inflammation, gene expression, and mitochondrial function.
Ketosis
A metabolic state characterized by elevated levels of ketone bodies in the blood (such as BHB), due to the prioritization of fat oxidation as an energy source.
Klotho (Klotho Protein)
A protein associated with longevity and cellular protection, involved in regulating energy metabolism, mitochondrial function, and the response to oxidative stress. Adequate levels are linked to greater biological resilience, better cognitive function, and healthy aging.
L
Lipids
Fat molecules essential for cellular structure, brain function, hormone synthesis, and energy storage.
Low-grade Inflammation
Chronic and systemic immune activation that does not produce the acute symptoms of classic inflammation but is considered an influential factor in multiple imbalances, including neuroinflammation.
M
Metabolic Syndrome
A clinical term describing the concurrence of metabolic risk factors (e.g., insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, elevated blood pressure).
Mindfulness
A practice of focused attention aimed at training moment-to-moment awareness. It is used as a non-pharmacological tool to modulate the stress response and support neuroendocrine balance.
Mitochondria
Cellular organelles responsible for cellular respiration and the generation of most energy (ATP). Mitochondrial dysfunction is often linked to low energy states and fatigue.

Neuroendocrine (Axis)
The integrated communication system between the nervous system (neurons) and the endocrine system (hormones). Its balance is fundamental for managing allostatic load and emotional states.
Neuroinflammation
The activation of the immune system within the central nervous system. It is related to the prolonged impact of chronic stress and low-grade inflammation on cognitive and emotional function.
Neurotransmitters
Chemical messengers in the brain that influence mood: serotonin, dopamine, GABA, glutamate, etc. Their alteration or imbalance interferes with mental well-being.
O
Oxidative Stress
An imbalance between the production of free radicals and the body’s ability to neutralize them through antioxidants. It is considered a biological factor influencing cellular aging and neuroinflammation.
P
Panic Attack
A sudden episode of intense anxiety and discomfort. Recently studied from the perspective of the acute response of the HPA Axis and neuro-metabolic balance.
Parasympathetic Nervous System
The branch of the ANS associated with recovery, regeneration, and energy conservation; it promotes relaxation, digestion, cellular repair, and neuroendocrine balance.
Precision Health
A health and wellness approach that uses biological individuality (biodata) to design highly personalized intervention and optimization strategies.
Precision Longevity
An advanced approach to promoting longevity based on an individualized understanding of the biological processes influencing aging, including energy metabolism, inflammation, mitochondrial function, and neuroendocrine regulation. It uses biomarkers and integrated biodata analysis to support personalized strategies for preserving cellular and functional health over time.
Predictive Health
A proactive scientific approach based on bioinformatics, biomathematics, and biodata to model individual biology and anticipate imbalances before clinical manifestation, allowing for personalized wellness and biological functionality strategies.
Prolonged Fasting
A state of continuous energy restriction extending beyond 24–48 hours. In humans, prolonged fasting is associated with profound metabolic changes, such as a sustained transition to ketosis, reduction of mTOR signaling, and activation of autophagy processes. Due to its systemic impact, it requires supervision and individualized assessment.

Stress
The general physiological response of an organism to any physical or psychological demand (stressor).
Stress Adaptation
The physiological capacity of the body to respond to and recover from stressors. It depends on the integration between the Autonomic Nervous System, the HPA axis, and energy metabolism.
Sympathetic Nervous System
The branch of the ANS associated with alertness and stress adaptation (fight or flight). It activates energy mobilization, increases heart rate, and releases cortisol; it can become dysfunctional if chronically activated.
Systems Biology
A scientific paradigm that conceives the organism as a complex and integrated network, where systems (metabolic, immune, neuroendocrine) constantly interact. It is the analytical framework used by WellCode Hub’s DBM® technology.
